Furnace Fire Cleanup in Edison, NJ

1/5/2023 (Permalink)

When a furnace fire in Edison, NJ leaves behind smoke and soot damage, our team is Here to Help begin cleanup immediately.

Nothing’s better during the cold months than staying warm inside in your home, but this reliance on heating equipment increases the likelihood of a fire occurring.

Did you know that the second leading cause of house fires in the U.S. is heating appliances, like your furnace? Furnace fires in Edison, NJ can cause extensive smoke and fire damage throughout your property and are often difficult to properly clean up.

Here, we’ll outline a few reasons why furnace fires start to help avoid them in your own home or business.

Call Us Today For Immediate Assistance - 732-248-9555

What Causes Furnace Fires?

1. Clogged Air Filter

Air filters remove any unwanted debris such as dust, pollen, and pet dander from the air entering your home and furnace. When homeowners forget to change their air filter regularly, the filter becomes clogged which leads to restricted air flow.

If air flow is restricted, the motor is forced to run for longer periods of time, making it prone to overheating. When a furnace overheats, components like the blower motor may catch on fire.

2. High Gas Pressure

A furnace requires a precise combination of gas and air to generate the necessary combustion for safe and efficient heat.

When the gas pressure is too low, it could cause condensation inside of the heat exchanger which could lead to corrosion. However, high gas pressure causes excessive heat production inside the furnace and can even lead to flammable soot buildup inside the heat exchanger.

3. Cracked Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger allows the heat produced by your furnace to transfer itself into the air that is then forced into your home through ducts and vents. During this process, the toxic exhaust gases produced by combustion are safely held inside the heat exchanger and later released through the flue pipe.

Over time, the walls of heat exchangers can develop small cracks or holes, which allow dangerous gases like carbon monoxide to escape. Since these gases are flammable, even small quantities can increase the chances of a house fire.

4. Flame Rollout

Flame rollouts can occur in gas furnaces if your unit isn’t well-maintained.

A flame rollout occurs when flammable combustion gases build up inside of the combustion chamber and there isn’t enough ventilation to provide adequate amounts of oxygen. When this happens, the furnace will produce flames that can roll out to get to the oxygen from outside the furnace.

Stay Safe While Grilling this Holiday Weekend

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Charcoal grill safety tips to consider:

  1. Grill outside and away from any structures
  2. Make sure your grill is stabl
  3. Keep your grill clean
  4. Check for propane leaks on your gas grill
  5. If the flame goes out, wait to re-light
  6. Take care around the grill
  7. Be careful with charcoal starter fluid
  8. Wear the right clothing
  9. Be ready to put out the fire

Other things to keep in mind:

  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquid to the flames.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • Electric charcoal starters do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container with a lid.
  • Have baking soda on hand to control a grease fire and a fire extinguisher nearby for other fires.
  • If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, keep a bucket of sand next to the grill.
  • Never use water to put out grease fire.

Precautions to Take While Grilling

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

Summer is typically filled with cookouts, BBQs, and family get-togethers, and while this is fun it also brings the possibility of fire hazards. In order to stay safe while still having fun, we’ve created a list of precautions to take while grilling.

Precautions to take while grilling with propane:

  • Stay alert when grilling. Avoid grilling when you are tired or have consumed too much alcohol.
  • Do not leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep the grill in a place that is free from flammable items and away from porch rails, and low lying branches.
  • Keep children and pets as far away from the grill as possible
  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year**
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
  • If the flames go out for any reason, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.
  • Keep your grill clean by regularly removing grease or fat buildup from the grates and trays below.

**A light soap & water solution applied to the hose is a great way to check for leaks. You can often smell a propane leak, but propane will also release bubbles when the soap and water solution is applied. If you detect a leak, turn the gas tank and grill off. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

Edison Smoke and Soot Cleanup

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Edison will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Keeping Your Home’s Smoke Detectors Operational

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms are an extremely important component of fire safety. Fires in homes with smoke alarms are less likely to be fatal, as having an early alert to danger can help everyone escape the home safely and effectively.

In addition to installing your smoke alarms on every floor of the home, in every bedroom and in areas that are highly susceptible to fires, it is important that you perform regular maintenance on them to make sure they remain effective and are replaced when they reach the end of their working life.

Important Components of Smoke Alarm Maintenance

  • Check smoke alarms every 30 days. It is recommended to test your smoke alarms at least once a month to make sure they are operational. Alarms should be equipped with a test button you can press and hold to make sure the alarm sounds.
  • Know when to replace the batteries. Smoke alarms used to be  designed to have the batteries replaced annually, but many alarms are now made with long-life batteries that do not require replacement for the lifetime of the unit. Be sure you know which type you have and set a reminder to replace your batteries when the manufacturer recommends it.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Regardless of the model, smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years at a minimum. Smoke alarms that are older than 10 years old have a 30% rate of failure, so do not let yours age past their effective lifespan. It is important to note that some smoke alarm models are designed for three- and five-year use, so knowing the details of yours when you install it is important.
  • Vacuum your alarm yearly. Dust can collect in the vents of smoke alarms and make them less sensitive to smoke and high heat.

If you have experienced fire damage to your home, we are here to help you. You call us at (732) 248-9555 anytime to get a quick response from our restoration experts.

Local Recycling Center Catches on Fire

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

Damages from a fire and water loss in Heller Park Industrial Park located in Edison, NJ.

Recently, a cardboard recycling plant in Edison, NJ had a large fire loss. Our owner was on-site within one hour of the call – at 12:30am. Once the fire department cleared the scene, our crews began extracting the water throughout this massive warehouse. By the end of the day, all the water was extracted and our air movers and dehumidifiers were beginning to dry out the structure. A quick reaction to a fire and smoke loss is critical to ensure the least amount of damage.

Type of Smoke

Paper, cardboard and wood are materials that generate a dry smoke. These types of fires generally have a higher temperature and are fast burning.

Plastics and rubber generate a wet smoke, which is sticky and smears. These types of fires generally have lower temperatures and are slow burning.

Fuel oil smoke and soot can be generated from a furnace puff back.

SERVPRO manufactures all of our cleaning products. Our technicians are expertly trained to know which product to use, depending on the type of fire and smoke each job has.

SERVPRO of Edison Helped Restore This House After a Fire

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Just a small crack in the chimney mortar caused unimaginable damage.

Fire is an unpredictable disaster that can cause long-lasting damage and destroy a home if not remediated properly.Even the smallest of fires can be a life altering experience for owners and occupants of a home. We recently were called in to help a local family remediate and recover from a fire damage in their home. Having put out the fire in their fireplace, the family went to bed, not anticipating that an unknown crack in their chimney would have such a devastating effect on their home. A hot ember became trapped in the crack, causing a fire to start in the chimney. Fortunately, the family smelled the smoke in the night, called in the fire department and everyone was safely evacuated. The fire was limited to the family room, but the smoke spread throughout the house, causing damage to the contents in the kitchen, living room, laundry room, bedroom and garage. Many restoration companies reached out to provide service, but they chose to work with SERVPRO because we were the company that made them feel most comfortable and assured that their home would be returned to its original condition. We quickly began work to remediate their property. We brought in a dry cleaning specialist to remove and clean their content, and also removed the content that was damaged beyond repair. We then cleaned the home to get rid of the smoke damage. This is just one story of how we made a disaster “Like it never even happened!”
